What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is one of the oldest and most refined systems of medicine in the world. Developed several thousand years ago in China, it is based in harmonious laws of nature and how they function in the human body, mind, and spirit. Today, acupuncture is used by one-third of the world as a primary healthcare system.
Relatively new to the United States, the popularity of acupuncture has grown immensely in the past several decades. It has been endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for the treatment of a wide variety of health concerns.
Acupuncture is based on a system of natural laws and principles which describe order and harmony in people and in nature. Life energy, also known as prana or chi, was known by the ancient Chinese to be operating in all of nature, and every cell of the human body. It carries within it the intelligent pattern that underlies the harmonious workings of nature. When life energy is in proper supply and order in the body, a person experiences a natural sense of vitality, balance, and health. A blockage or deficiency in energy within the body creates symptoms such as pain, fatigue, stress, and many other possible conditions.
Acupuncture works by restoring the proper flow of energy within the body. Hair-thin needles are placed with delicate precision along subtle energy channels, or meridians. Areas of a person's internal energy system that are deficient are nourished, and areas that are overworking are relaxed. This process promotes a state of balance in which the body, mind, and spirit are able to heal naturally.
